Overview:

Prince Rupert Fellowship Baptist Church is currently in search of the person called to be the next Senior Pastor. The church is multi-generational, with approximately 30 members and an average of 70 Sunday attendees. This is a regional ministry with ties to Fellowship Pacific. Our expectation for the candidate is that they are Spirit-filled, Bible-believing, and have a passionate and prayerful relationship with Jesus. The Senior Pastor will need to demonstrate a dynamic and reproducible walk with God, be a proven gifted communicator, a compassionate shepherd who equips others, and be a dedicated team player. The successful candidate must embrace our church's mission to overflow in grace, and love Prince Rupert, our region and our world..

Position Purpose:

Our church is committed to advancing the Kingdom of God and we are seeking a Senior Pastor. The Senior Pastor works closely with the Church Board to develop a vision that aligns with our mission. They lead the staff team in engaging, equipping, and empowering the congregation to fulfill our mission. Through the preaching of the Word and modelling disciple-making, the Senior Pastor motivates and encourages the congregation to be a community of Christ followers who share the love of God, with Prince Rupert, our region and our world.

Expectations and Qualifications:

1. Character (1 Timothy 3:1-7)

  • Lives a Spirit-filled life, marked by exemplary Christ‐like character.

  • Believes that the Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God, and our foundation for faith and practice.

  • Demonstrates and fosters the biblical values of grace, humility, hospitality, transparency and accountability.

  • Has authentic empathy and a willingness to walk with people through their hardships and testings.

  • Communicates God’s faithfulness through difficulty and spurs others on to trust God within the circumstances of their own lives.

  • Has significant evidence of the fruit of the Spirit in their personal life and ministry.

  • Gladly gives God the credit for successes in life and ministry, rejoicing in all things, and thereby leveraging every opportunity to honour God and point people to Jesus Christ.

3. Strategic Leadership Skills

  • Embraces and articulates the church’s core values and vision, and effectively leads the congregation to implement plans for building community and outreach.

  • Develops insightful responses to the issues confronting the local church.

  • Is the lead communicator of vision and direction for the church.

  • A collaborative team member who works well with deacons, staff and volunteers, and fosters and encourages learning and taking steps of faith.

4. Pastoral Care (Matthew 25:31-46)

  • A shepherd who leads the church in providing pastoral care to the congregation.

  • Prays with and for the congregation.

  • Encourages each person in their Christian walk.

  • Proactively supports faith in the home, marriages and child rearing.

5. Spiritual Development

  • A leader by example in actively seeking God’s direction for our church, individuals in the congregation and themselves through prayer and Bible study.

  • Called to equip and encourage spiritual development through a life of worship and spiritual discipline.

  • Encourages each person to recognize their spiritual gifting and respond to God's call.

  • Able to disciple new believers and mature believers to take the next step.

6. Outreach and Missions

  • Called to and passionate about leading the church in outreach and sharing the gospel.

  • Embraces the multicultural nature of our community and has a willingness to humbly learn the culture of local First Nations, including the impact of residential schools.

  • Enthusiastic about promoting and supporting both local and global missions opportunities.

Current State

A recent survey of the congregation identified strengthening community and outreach as the two main themes of the church. There is a strong desire to continue and expand cross-generational activities in various settings. The willingness to outreach includes the surrounding First Nation villages and reaching out to those who did not return to the church after the COVID-19 pandemic. The church desires to see the church reach more people and has a number of enthusiastic new Christians. Lately the largest section of growth is in their 30s and 40s.

Qualifications:

  • Meets the biblical qualifications of a pastoring/teaching elder as outlined in
    1 Timothy 3: 1-7 and Titus 1: 5-9.

  • Able to fully endorse the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches of Canada statement of faith.

  • Evangelical Christian with an evident, growing relationship with Jesus Christ.

  • Has undergone believer’s baptism.

  • Able to model the on-going process of learning how to make Jesus Lord in all areas of one’s life.

  • Passionate about the work of God through the local church.

  • Holds a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biblical Studies or ministry training from a recognized Bible college. Seminary training preferred.

  • Committed to a high standard of collaboration and communication with other staff and volunteers.

  • Has at least four years of pastoral experience.

  • Competent preacher.

  • Ability to lead worship is an asset but not required.

History and Community

1. Origins

Prince Rupert Fellowship Baptist Church has served the community of Prince Rupert and its surrounding area for decades. Over the last decade, the church has developed relationships with First Nation communities on BC’s North Coast. This has included invitations to bring Vacation Bible Schools to the communities and assisting with weddings and funerals.

2. Affiliation

We are affiliated with Fellowship Pacific, a community of approximately one hundred autonomous local churches in British Columbia and Yukon. Nationally, this region is part of the larger community of the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in Canada, with more than five hundred churches across Canada.

3. Our Local Community

The City of Prince Rupert is located on Highway 16 on the North Coast of British Columbia. As the Northern terminal for BC Ferries and the Southern terminal for the Alaska Ferry System, tourism is a major industry. Activities in the Port of Prince Rupert primarily drive employment. The church supports the Seafarers’ Mission to reach out to the crew onboard ships.

There are about 12,000 people in Prince Rupert. Approximately 40% of the community is First Nations, including members of the Ts’msyen, Haida and Nisga’a nations. Over 60% of students in the public school system are First Nation students.

Prince Rupert is a small but diverse community, with immigrants from countries around the world. There is a large variety of outdoor and indoor recreational activities. Community events are well attended which is a tribute to the community's spirit.

Church Life As It Is Now

1. General Information

  • Doctrine – We subscribe to the statement of faith of the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in BC and Yukon (Fellowship Pacific). This statement of faith is published on their website at www.febpacific.ca.

  • Culture – A recent survey of the congregation identified strengthening community and outreach as the two main themes of the church. There is a strong desire to continue and expand cross-generational activities in various settings. The willingness to outreach includes the surrounding First Nation villages and reaching out to those who did not return to the church after the COVID-19 pandemic. The church desires to see the church reach more people and has a number of enthusiastic new Christians. Lately the largest section of growth is in their 30s and 40s.

  • Finances – Our annual operating budget, funded by individual gifts, is holding stable at under $175,000, with an additional $5,000 being given for special projects and missions.

  • Worship Style – Our style of worship in music is generally contemporary, although we often include older hymns.

  • nline Outreach – Services are broadcast on YouTube and Facebook, reaching those in the coastal villages and those in Prince Rupert who are unable to attend the Sunday service.

2. Significant Ministries

  • Preaching – The church values sound biblical preaching in our Sunday service that improves our understanding of the Scripture in its historical context and encourages ways to apply the Scripture in our lives.

  • Children’s Ministries – Sunday School is provided to children up to grade 5 during Sunday Service. Children go to Sunday School after the children’s lesson. A nursery is provided for children up to 2 years old. For the past several years a Vacation Bible School has taken place in Prince Rupert in the summer, in addition to the First Nation villages of Hartley Bay and Kitkatla. A long-running preschool is closing in February 2024.

  • Youth Ministry – Youth from Grade 6 to Grade 12 gather together weekly to play games and learn about God. Additional weekend activities are planned twice a month. Older youth participate as helpers in the Vacation Bible Schools.

  • Adult Ministries – Men’s Bible Study, Mom’s Meet, Seniors Bible Study and a Community Prayer Meeting help to encourage adults to grow in their faith. Deeper Bible learning takes place in other sessions offered throughout the year.

3. Missions

  • The church supports the Seafarers Mission and the Fellowship Aid and International Relief (FAIR).

  • Short-Term Missions – The church’s developing relationship with First Nation communities provides opportunities for mission work, including the Vacation Bible Schools.

4. Leadership Structure

  • Deacons – The church is led by a Board of elected Deacons who, along with the Senior Pastor, establish the vision and direction of the church while maintaining a focus on meeting the needs of the people within and outside our church family.

  • Senior Pastor – The Senior Pastor works in partnership with Deacons, staff and key volunteer leaders who oversee many areas of ministry. The Senior Pastor is accountable to the Church Board.

  • Associate Pastor – This position has been vacant for approximately two years. A return to pre-COVID attendance will likely be required for the church to reinstate this position.

  • Staff – All staff are accountable to the Senior Pastor.

5. Facilities

  • Size – The church includes a sanctuary able to seat about 200, a sizable space below the sanctuary, a kitchen, and offices. There is a modern outdoor playground on the property.

  • Community Use – The church takes the lead in hosting travelling performances such as Tim and the Glory Boys and Leland Klassen.

  • Pre-COVID there were other community groups that used the building.
